Baking is in my blood. It is my connection to my heritage. Each time I begin a recipe, it is a call to the ancestors. A ritual to recharge my soul.
My favorite childhood memories are in my mother’s kitchen. She hardly ever used recipes. My mom reminded me of a superhero as she made magic with her mixer. My mother taught me to bake and I’m teaching my daughter.
Baking is also a part of my family’s story of triumph over challenges. I created LilaLue Sweets in honor of my grandmother Lila. Cooking and baking allowed Lila to care for her family as a single Black woman in the south.
Like Lila, her daughters became amazing bakers and I’m excited to have inherited this gift. I am honored to carry on this tradition for my family.
